Several generations after arriving in the United States, there can be a disconnect from our family immigration stories. This loss of our own immigration stories can compound thee negative feelings many Americans have toward modern immigrants. However, I believe that a new understanding can be built through storytelling; through an interactive e-learning map designed for students.
The proposed map would be integrated into a history lesson on immigration. Students would click on locations all over the world map, and then be introduced to a character from the selected country. The character would take the student through their national immigration story. Each character would start at the time when mass immigration from that country first happened, and go on to explain why it happened, what immigrants from that country did when they arrived in the United States, and the challenges those immigrant populations faced. At the end of the story, the character would encourage further learning by inviting the students to “visit” countries that share similar stories, whether through shared eras or societal challenges.
As a follow-up to the initial map lesson, I envision teachers assigning a family immigration research project. Students would then return to their classrooms, eager to share what they learned with their classmates and draw even more connections between other immigration stories.
